The Wallet Contents of Charles Henry Kretzer, my Grandfather
My grandfather, Charles Henry Kretzer, was killed in a mine explosion on July 17, 1935. His wallet was given to his widow. She in turn passed it along to her youngest son, Earl Benton Kretzer, my father. When he died in 2005, it was discovered, and I scanned the contents of it to insure they would not be lost.
It is obvious that my grandfather had a love of electronics and the radios of the day. His daughters, my Aunt Ellen and Aunt Ann confirmed this, and told me that other Van Lear residents would seek him out for repairs to their radios. I have no idea of the significance of the newspaper article, which dates to World War I. The mine rescue and first aid cards do add a bit of irony, considering how he died. |
