Emmitt Bromley, known as “The Father of Adams County” served in the Colorado House of Representatives from XXXX-XXXX. He introduced legistation that would create Adams County. His real world job was farming and ranching. He owned a large tract of land that today borders Bromley Lane. His old farm and building have been designated as National Historic Landmarks and are set to be restored.
Dewey Strong is credited as being the co-founder (along with Daniel F. Carmichael). He was mayor of Brighton, and operated Strong’s Merchantile for many years. He has a street named after him in the downtown section of Brighton.
James Counter owned the predominate lumber yard in Brighton for many years in the early days. It was located in at least two separate spots. The yard was eventually sold to Norris Peterson, who changed the name to United Lumber. United Lumber went out of business and the land and building was sold to the City of Brighton. It’s downtown location was perfect for the revitalization plan of the City Council. It was torn down in 2008 to make was for the new library.
All three city fathers are buried in Elmwood Cemetery.
