On Second Thought..

1/29/2013

My election night blog I said that I thought it was over. That Obama’s reelection spelled the end of America as we know it. I said that socialism was now inevitable and that would ultimately lead to a complete collapse. Well, it’s been nearly three months since then and I’ve had time to think about this more and contemplate what can be done, and the likelihood of righting this ship. As a result I officially say “We’re screwed.”

We are locked into a hopeless situation, where the best possible scenarios now involve only delaying the inevitable, in hopes that enough American’s come to their senses to stop electing liberals to office. Why?

Liberals control K-12 education and most colleges. K-12 education is dominated by the teachers union, and school boards that populated mostly by former and current teachers union members. These unions represent the interest of the teachers, not the interest of the students or the parents. The candid and telling quote from Albert Shanker, former president of the United Federation of Teachers;

"When schoolchildren start paying union dues, that’s when I’ll start representing the interests of school children."

 makes their position clear.

Those same unions are involved in an incestuous relationship with the Democratic Party. The unions funnel millions of dollars to Democrats (and almost nothing to Republicans) and the Democrats in turn, through school boards and state politics give teachers a very generous pay scale, benefits and pension program. The teachers are thus  (and I speak generally, not for every teacher) are bound to the Democrat party, so as not to derail the gravy train. This leads them to support every liberal policy that tumbles out of the mouth of a brain-dead liberal politician. Children become indoctrinated in the liberal culture and must figure out for themselves that the false promises and dead end policies they were taught are false.

Most colleges (Hillsdale and Pepperdine are two shining examples that are immune to this) then turn the heat up to a boil and temper these still impressionable kids into liberals. Some of them go into business and the real world and are scrubbed of this foolishness. Most don’t. With degrees is Sociology, Women’s or Minority Studies, Music, Political Science, and any number of liberal arts degrees, these people look to the liberals who traveled this path before them for employment or handouts, until they too can mentor someone with a degree that can’t finance even a payment on their student load debt. They end up in politics, news outlets, or right back on campus as teachers and professors.

Labor Unions Want a $5.75 Big Mac

There have been a handful of protests in the past two weeks that appear to be driven by labor unions. Their aim to raise the minimum wage paid to fast food workers in New York City, to $15.00 an hour. The protests have been endorsed by the Service Employees International Union (SEIU), who are undoubtedly looking for new members.

The website championing this movement, Fast Food Forward, lists four reasons why this new minimum wage is needed. They are all misleading or irrelevant. Stay with me for just a few lines while I deconstruct these assertions. It is important to understand how weak their arguments are, and then I’ll tell you what they are leaving out.

#1—“200 billion is grossed by the fast food industry annually”

This fact is misleading. They use the amount of money that flows into the industry without telling you how much flows back out, leaving a profit. It is the profit that is important. You can gross a billion dollars, but if you spend two billion in the process, you won’t survive. Their profit margin is in the 10% range. Labor costs are about 25-30% of the business expenses of a fast food restaurant. Let’s put this on the back burner for a just a bit.

#2—“$25,000 is the average daily salary of most fast food CEOs, over 2x what the average worker makes in 1 year”

This is likely not even a fact and it’s irrelevant. The website doesn’t quote its source, but these types of “facts” often include the stock options and bonuses paid that are based on the performance of a company. The company does well; the CEO gets a nice slice. The company tanks; the CEO gets canned.

It is irrelevant because most fast food restaurants are franchised. That means the real CEO of that company is making nowhere near the amount quoted, and is often the guy running the day to day operation.  It’s just a way to pit people against people.

#3—“Workers make only 25% of the money they need to survive in NYC while working at fast food companies.”

#4--$11,000 is average yearly salary of fast food workers in NYC”

These fast food jobs are entry level positions. These jobs were never supposed to be used to support a family. These are jobs you take to start a working career. They are equivalent to babysitting the neighborhood children on weekends. These are jobs traditionally filed by high school kids first starting out and working part time, (A reason why #4 is misleading) and still living at home. These are jobs that teach basic employment practices (show up each day, on time, and do what is asked of you and do it very well) and give kids a source of income.

He Who Would be King

8/26/2012

Barrack Obama does not want the job of President of the United States. It’s true. He has discovered that the Presidency is not a job suited to his strong points, as he sees them. Barrack Obama believes that he is the smartest person in the room, that he sees the big picture, and that, he, and he alone, has the vision to guide America to a place where we all will live in harmony and prosperity. Barrack Obama has found that Congress is a hindrance and the Supreme Court a nuisance. So what is a smart, vision-endowed man like Obama to do? Become king of course.

Being king is soooooo much easier. Kings give orders, and then people follow them. There is no messy legislative branch that must first pass a law, that the President would have to give his OK to, and then enforce. He would not have to worry about if a thing he wants to do is constitutional. The King says what is constitutional, because he changes what the constitution says at his whim.

I submit the following as proof

On June 15, 2012 Obama announced that his administration would no longer pursue deportation of “the children” of illegal aliens as long as they weren’t criminals and came to this country before age 16. Those children can be as old as 30 and there is no mechanism to check when they came to America. So in effect this is an amnesty program. Making this declaration even more egregious is the fact that just a year earlier, while addressing a Univision town hall, Obama said he specifically did not have the authority to do what he is now doing.

On April 2, 2012, Obama was very concerned that the Supreme Court would rule his signature piece of legislation, ObamaCare, unconstitutional. So he made a public statement that it

“……would be an unprecedented extraordinary step of overturning a law that was passed by a strong majority of a democratically elected Congress”

That of course is crap. It passed by 7 votes in the House, and parliamentary procedures were misused to pass by a single vote in the Senate. Not one Republican voted for it. Then, of course, there the 200 plus year president of the Supreme Court hearing arguments on legislation and then, yes, maybe overturning them.  Obama knows all about Marbury vs. Madison, which established that president. Obama used to lecture on constitutional law. So either he thinks he is king and is above Supreme Court oversight, or he really sucked as a lecturer.

Do Not Muck it Up

On Friday the Labor Department announced that the national unemployment rate dropped to 8.3%. I don’t want to be a killjoy, but while it is encouraging that the trend is in the right direction, it is still well above 8%. The goal is to get into the fives; that is the territory where the vast majority of those who want to find a job are working. So, while there is room for optimism, we are far from out of the woods.

But, what disturbed me most about this report was our President’s reaction. He used it as excuse to extol Congress to pass the payroll tax cut and to

“..not slow down the recovery we are on. Do not muck it up.”

At the risk of being labeled a racist; this is the most egregious case of the pot calling the kettle black I have heard on this subject.

“Do not muck it up”.

Boeing decides to build a manufacturing plant in right-to-work state, South Carolina. The unions representing the workers in Washington state, throw a hissy fit. They file a complaint with the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB), claiming that Boeing’s decision on where to build is retaliation for the labor strikes called in the Seattle plants. Since it is retaliation, they claim, that it is illegal under the Wagner Act of 1935. Does the NLRB, lead by recent Obama appointees, laugh and tell the unions they have no power to tell a company where they can build their plants? No, it takes the case and eventually blackmails Boeing into signing a new labor agreement with the machinist union in Seattle. This cost Boeing millions in related costs. How likely are they, or another big company, going to be to build a plant in the US, in this kind of
environment?

“Do not muck it up.”

President Obama championed, and his fellow Democrats rammed a controversial, ineffective,
and financially burdensome healthcare bill, ObamaCare, down the throats of the American people. Businesses everywhere are trying to figure out how it will affect them. But, based on the amended costs of health insurance premiums, since the bill was passed; it is universally agreed that healthcare and healthcare insurance will be more expensive. Businesses are now forced to pay for insurance that will cover 25 year old “children’. Businesses respond by not hiring new people; focusing instead on improving productivity and approving more overtime.

“Do not muck it up.”

Canada desperately wants to build a north-south pipeline to send petroleum products originating from the oil sands in Alberta to our refineries along the Gulf Coast. The Keystone XL pipeline would create 20,000 jobs almost right away and hundreds of thousands of oil related jobs in the coming years. Obama at first gave his approval, and I gave him credit for that. But true to form he did the political calculus and put his re-

    Why this Blog?

I'm 60, conservative and sincerely hope that my blog can make a difference. I think the Democrat Party has been taken over by America haters, career victims, and those who believe that the federal government should be your daddy. I'm looking to give those who vote for the "D" no matter what, something to think about.
